ABSTRACT

Language arts encompass the subjects that develop student skills in written and oral language. Gifted children often, but not always, develop an early facilitation for language, including talking early and teaching themselves to read before they enter school. Parents can encourage expertise in language early on by exposing young people to a broad range of experiences, reading to them on a regular basis, and providing reasons to write. Interactive handheld word games, computer word games, and Internet word games work well for the tech-savvy generation. The parents then educated themselves about current research on addressing the needs of high-ability, gifted, and highly motivated students in general and more specifically in math. They wanted to know the true abilities of their son, what the experts recommended, how they could realistically advocate for him at school, and what they could do on their own to contribute to his education.
