ABSTRACT

Behavior is often one of the most difficult aspects of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) for parents to manage. Many people who seek treatment for their son begin with their pediatrician, especially if their son has a long-standing relationship with the doctor. Pediatricians have strong knowledge of developmental sequences and see children of various ages on a daily basis. Many pediatricians are willing to treat a child with moderate ADHD with medication if they believe it is warranted. A psychologist would be a good place to start if we are unsure about the role our child’s intellectual functioning plays in his behavior. One thing to keep in mind is that ADHD is a very complex disorder with unique presentations. Many boys with ADHD, especially those with self-esteem issues or an explosive temper or depression, find help working with a counselor or mental health therapist.
