ABSTRACT

Most Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnoses come during a child’s elementary school years. Elementary schools are not the same as when we were a student. If we are like most parents of boys with ADHD, we will find that our son’s elementary years will be filled with learning and new challenges for us as well. Teaching boys with ADHD sometimes requires a little bit more ingenuity. Home plays a far more important role than just a place to do homework. In most states, standardized testing plays a role in a school’s evaluation and sometimes in whether a student is promoted. From time to time, a boy with ADHD has heightened anxiety because he recognizes that he has performance deficits. Sometimes leaving private school is a mutual decision between parents and the school, and other times it is our decision not to return.
