ABSTRACT

Sometimes even our most effective parenting tools, outside help including medication, and our sons best efforts are not enough to enable him to succeed in the classroom without interventions. Sometimes the school will initiate the process for services and accommodations. Often, however, parents need to take the leadership role. Some schools are very accommodating and parent-friendly, but occasionally we will run into a school that is resistant to providing accommodations. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a federal civil rights law that protects children with disabilities from ages 3-21 against discrimination in public and nonreligious schools, including colleges and technical schools receiving federal funds, and provides accommodations. Generally, children who qualify for Individuals With Disabilities Education Act are more impaired and require more services than those best served by a 504 plan.
