ABSTRACT

It is important to remember that organization, thinking before acting, and being able to sustain attention are all developmental by nature, meaning that behaviors can occur within a range of ages and still be considered within the normal range. Parents often wonder how it is possible to distinguish typical behavior appropriate to the developmental stage from atypical ADHD behaviors and how long it should take their son to progress through developmental stages. Awareness and early detection enable reader's to have a better understanding of their child’s behaviors. The preschool years are an important window of time in development. Their son will need them to be his advocate and safety net as he explores his world and adapts to the structure of a preschool setting. Genetically based neurological characteristics, including less activity in the frontal regions of the brain (especially those areas that inhibit behavior, resist distractions, and control activity level) and differences in the effectiveness of neurotransmitters, have been suggested.
