ABSTRACT

Most attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnoses come during a child’s elementary school years. Schools and teachers are much more knowl-edgeable about ADHD and how to effectively serve those students. Increased use of technology in the classroom is a plus for most boys with ADHD. Boys with ADHD do better in schools with structure, good communication with parents, solid curriculum that matches instruction to the child’s abilities, energetic teachers who utilize experiential learning and a variety of instructional techniques, high expectations for learners, and reasonable class sizes. Some teachers are much more effective than others in dealing with boys with ADHD. The ultimate decision will be up to the principal, who has to consider many factors. Children with ADHD may require more relevant rewards and consistent consequences for behavior than other children. Teaching boys with ADHD sometimes requires a little bit more ingenuity. Many school districts have practice tests on the computer, an effective way for a boy with ADHD to learn.
