ABSTRACT

The adult who demonstrated the process infused actions that were irrelevant to opening the box, and the children consistently repeated all of the actions—even the ones that were unnecessary. One theory is that kids copy adults because they don’t fully understand the cause-effect relationship. For all they know, spinning around in a circle has just as much to do with opening a box as opening the latch. They trust adults and believe that if they are choosing to perform an action, then it must be necessary to the process. Feeling isolated with our feelings is painful, particularly for a child, but the parents can use our experiences to show our family members that they are not alone.
