ABSTRACT

Authoritative parents are those who are demanding of their children, but also respond to their needs and requests. They set clear expectations and follow through with consequences. These parents support their children and value their independence. In general, the children of authoritative parents tend to be happy and confident in their abilities to master a task. They are socially well adjusted and do well in school. Additionally, they tend to respond respectfully toward other authoritative figures (e.g., teachers, bosses, etc.). Children of authoritarian parents have difficulty establishing their independence, which causes problems when they are developing their interests into passions. Furthermore, because they tend to give up when frustrated, these children struggle to develop the mental muscles needed to persevere through challenges. The children of neglectful parents struggle to develop grit that extends beyond having their physical needs met. They demonstrate the perseverance necessary to survive, but because this is their primary goal, there is little room for developing passion.
