ABSTRACT
Children are born with a certain amount of fearlessness and an overwhelming level of confidence. They don’t even know that failure is a possibility; this is something they pick up through their experiences and interactions with others. The wave of educational trends has taken us toward inquiry, discovery, and student choice. This can be really frustrating for children (and their parents) who have been told exactly what to do by their teachers. Classrooms have become small laboratories that mirror real-life problems for our students to solve, which is a fabulous environment for cultivating grit. Celebrate the good and the super ugly parts and all of the times our child didn’t give up. If the parents continue to focus on what they want our child to do (persevere), and if the parents understand what our child can control (the process), then they are much more likely to see these behaviors repeated.
