ABSTRACT

A good illustration of this is our ability to produce a decent dinner despite our children being noisy and running around the house. Although this example may be anxiety provoking, our systems modulate to the stimuli in our environments. Sensory modulation is a complex process that typically occurs automatically. Sometimes a child's interaction with their environment and their internal ability to respond to sensory demands is delayed. However, even for us, there is sometimes a misfit between our sensory system and the environment. Although we have the ability to modulate our sensory systems, responses to sensory stimuli must be enhanced or reduced. In relation to self-regulation, SOR and SUR can be observed in sensory seeking and avoiding behaviors. In addition to defensiveness, gravitational insecurity may ensue. Again, the information coming in is threatening and triggering the child’s SNS. Praxis is typically autonomic and necessary for everyday activities.
