ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 discusses how to help twice-exceptional children and teens build emotional regulation skills. Some of the common obstacles faced by neurodivergent youth, such as anxiety, perfectionism and stress, alexithymia, and rejection sensitivity are examined. The I-CAN method for regulating emotions provides parents with a framework for helping children and teens develop self-regulating strategies. The four steps are: investigate (building awareness surrounding dysregulation and recognizing and understanding the signals of dysregulation), communicate (find ways to communicate about feeling dysregulated, including emotional literacy), activate (use problem-solving skills to develop plans to handle dysregulation), and navigate (utilize specific strategies that can be used to return to a regulated state).
