ABSTRACT

Chapter 10 looks at ways to help neurodivergent kids develop effective communication within social relationships. The differences between cognitive and affective empathy are explored. Parents learn through this chapter how to coach their children to develop perspective-taking skills to improve interpersonal communication with peers and authority figures. Some common problems associated with communicating for neurodivergent children and teens, such as others-oriented perfectionism, finding like-minded peers, and communicating via electronic means are examined. Conflict resolution, including the 5-Step Apology script, are also addressed.
