ABSTRACT

Chapter 11 looks at self-directed motivation and some of the concerns that twice-exceptional children may have with motivation. The impact of rewards on intrinsic motivation for neurodivergent learners is included, with information about the self-determination theory of motivation and how families can work to help students learn to harness their motivation. The PATHS Process is a method for parents to use motivational interviewing techniques to facilitate growth and change with their kids who struggle with finding motivation. The PATHS Process is a conversation structure that addresses five issues related to motivation: Purpose, Awareness, Task, Hurdles and Helpers, and Successes.
