ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 explores the history of neurodiversity and how the neurodiversity movement is changing the way we view divergent people. Understanding the role of parents in supporting neurodivergent children and teens is discussed from a humanistic parenting perspective. The importance of the words we choose surrounding neurodiversity is considered, including the implications of person-first versus identity-first language and understanding functioning labels in neurodiversity. The impact for parents who recognize signs of neurodiversity in themselves through their children’s diagnosis is validated.
