ABSTRACT
Show the class several words with a given root or affix (suffix or prefix) that you will be studying. Choose familiar words that you are sure students have encountered previously. Ask, “What do these words have in common?” After they have stated the common quality, introduce the suffix, root word or prefix, its meaning and any derivations of its spelling. Then introduce the vocabulary words that are formed from this base.
