ABSTRACT

The SIGS-2 was developed for the primary purpose of identifying students for participation in gifted and talented education programs. Identification processes and procedures vary tremendously based on educational policy and local administrative guidelines. The SIGS-2 can be used in various ways as part of a comprehensive screening and identification process. Although the rating scales are versatile, authors recommend their use in accordance with established best practices related to the identification of gifted and talented students. The screening and assessment processes will always be improved by expanding the knowledge of all stakeholders, including administrators, teachers, counselors, and parents/guardians. Screening and assessment for participation in gifted education is most equitable and fair when all students and families are informed on the processes and procedures involved. There should be no hidden or insider knowledge about how the system works. Although no one intentionally facilitates insider knowledge, it may occur unless broad and consistent efforts are made to disseminate accurate information.
