ABSTRACT

The English language, like many of the approximately 2,700 spoken and written languages in the world, is composed of a mixture of other linguistic influences. Knowledge of Anglo-Saxon word construction forms a critical foundation for reading and spelling the English language. Finally, a little more than one out of every 10 words in our language is based upon Greek word construction. In order for students who are struggling with language acquisition to be successful, these students will need remediation in Latinate roots, suffixes, and connectives. The meaning of any word that contains a Latinate root must revolve around the meaning or concept of the root. Better stated, if a student can identify a Latinate root within a word and the root's meaning, the student has foundational knowledge of the meaning around which the word revolves. Students will first encounter Anglo-Saxon word construction at the very beginning of their formal education, and this will extend throughout the rest of their lives.
