ABSTRACT

The purpose of tiering is to ensure that all of the students are making continuous progress toward the learner outcomes. Assessing the level of readiness is the starting point for matching instruction to students in order to facilitate continuous progress. Rich curriculum is for all students, and the tiering matches the learning experiences to students' levels of readiness, strengths, and interests in the topic being studied. Tiering by process has the goal of making students critical and creative thinkers, both of which are key to problem solving and decision making. Tiering instruction with products can be accomplished by providing rubrics that are increasingly more sophisticated. Tiering involves ratcheting up the content, process, and product in the learning experience. It is normal to plan learning experiences for students who need support to master grade-level learning outcomes as well as for those who are on target to reach the grade-level outcomes.
