ABSTRACT

Lannie Kanevsky explored Venn diagrams in relation to differentiation and tiered assignments and focused on ensuring challenge for children and young people who are ready for advanced learning. Venn diagrams are an easy way to create tiered assignments in every classroom. Because Venn diagrams are so structured, they serve as excellent graphic organizers for learners to develop and organize their ideas before writing. As students brainstorm and develop ideas, Venn diagrams enable them to organize those ideas and elaborate as needed. Regardless of the level of ability and complexity, using Venn diagrams as tiered prewriting activities will ensure a strong start to a writing unit. Venn diagrams can be used to differentiate process by varying the tiers of complexity. Venn diagrams can be used to tier prewriting, unit reviews or assessments, in-class learning experiences, or homework.
