ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an information related to setting up the school environment to serve children with diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder. Three steps should be taken to create an evidence-based classroom: develop the Individualized Education Program (IEP), create a supportive classroom team, and set up the school environment. The first step in creating an evidence-based classroom is to develop an IEP for the child with special needs. In the following section, the steps for implementing a comprehensive assessment are outlined. The second step in a comprehensive assessment, the observation stage, requires teachers and coordinators to collect additional information to provide baseline data and a present level of performance using the following steps: watch, collect data, and record anecdotal information. The task analysis pages state the objective, break it down into steps, and describe the teaching procedure. The teaching procedure provides descriptions of the strategies or approaches, a task analysis, and/or a teaching sequence.
