ABSTRACT

Traumatic brain injury is a complex injury. The term applies to open or closed head injuries resulting in impairments in one or more areas, such as cognition; language; memory; attention; reasoning; abstract thinking; judgment; problem solving; sensory, perceptual and motor abilities; psycho-social behavior; physical functions; information processing; and speech. Specialists classify traumatic brain injuries as either open or closed head injuries. Closed head injuries occur more frequently than open head injuries. The extent to which an individual will display complications will range from mild to severe depending on the degree and severity of the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Teachers should be prepared to work with many related services providers. Occupational therapists assess functions and complications related to the child’s daily living skills, cognition, and vision and perception, all of which a traumatic brain injury may affect.
