ABSTRACT

Children who are nonverbal or who have speech impairments can use picture communication to make requests or indicate their turn-taking preferences. Toys and materials should be kept at the children’s level and children should be able to take them off the shelves or out of the cabinets with ease. All children need opportunities to make choices about centers and materials they want to use. Children with special needs experience the same feelings when they make choices about their activities, and the results for them are a sense of accomplishment and achievement. Teachers in inclusive classrooms will always face challenges when making decisions for children with special needs.
