Executive functioning is an umbrella term used to describe higher level cognitive abilities that mediate a person’s overall ability to utilize and demonstrate intellectual capabilities. Included in this domain are behavioral controls (impulsivity, emotions, regulating work efforts) and cognitive controls (monitoring and modifying attention and effort level, planning ahead, managing time, following through on tasks, or organizing materials). Impulsivity refers to their rushing into things without thinking or planning. Younger, impulsive children may seem fearless or reckless when in fact they just don’t realize the consequences of their actions.
