ABSTRACT

This chapter helps the readers to understand how Asperger’s syndrome (AS) and Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NLD) affect people’s everyday life. It is worth noting that some of the greatest minds in history are now suspected to also have been people with AS or NLD, among them Albert Einstein, General George Patton, and Charles Darwin. The chapter shows a case study of Katie Miller, an award-winning artist who also happens to have a diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome. It describes stories from students with AS and NLD who have had problems understanding friendship and meeting new friends, and provides strategies to use the areas of interest to help develop the social skills. Fine motor skills, or precise physical tasks like tying shoes, buttoning, or even handwriting, pose another common challenge for those with AS or NLD. Anxiety, meltdowns, and shut-downs are probably the most all-encompassing difficulties faced by kids with AS and NLD.
