ABSTRACT

This chapter describes that appearance and good hygiene are important enough to pay attention to, it is probably for one of two reasons. The first reason has to do with the general attitude. The second reason is more physical in nature, and has to do with sensory integration and motor skills. Having Asperger’s syndrome (AS) or Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NLD) affects the fine motor skills, which are movements that require a high degree of control or precision, like handwriting. Sometimes people with AS or NLD can be very sensitive to smell, taste, touch, or texture. Sometimes showering may feel prickly for those with AS or NLD, and a bath may be a better option. Baths may have challenges too. The temperate change from getting into the bath and then getting out and putting on new clothes or pajamas present a different kind of sensory issue.
