ABSTRACT

Socratic teaching similarly requires learning the adaptable elements and versatile principles of the Socratic Method and applying them freely, creatively, and intelligently in new contexts. The Socratic dialogue and discussion provide such a systematic opportunity for discovery. Socrates was not the perfect teacher, and 5th century Athens was not a perfect society. The Socratic Method leads the students beyond such paraphrasing, which represents at its best the Understanding category of Bloom's taxonomy. Paraphrasing does represent a degree of understanding, but is not far from rote learning. The Socratic Method can be applied to any subject, but the topic of ethics continues to be fertile ground for discussion. For this analysis and evaluation, the Socratic Method provides inductive guidance in clear steps appropriate to the individual and group.
