ABSTRACT

Resilience, grit, and tenacity do not develop from taking an easy path to success. This process involves encountering obstacles along the way. Sometimes, the obstacles have to do with author's circumstances that are out of their control, but sometimes the obstacle is something within themselves that the authors can tackle, if they have the self-awareness to do so. It can be hard to push through obstacles. In many cases, there may be a smaller, short-term reward that can be attained if an individual decides to avoid facing an obstacle. The child is given the option of ringing a bell to signal the researcher to come back and permit the child to eat the first presented treat. Children use a variety of methods to distract themselves to persevere toward the goal—a double treat. But not all children can manage this time; some children tap the bell, signaling for the researcher to return early, and eat the single treat.
