ABSTRACT

Deliberate practice is a kind of practice that is intentional and facilitates progress toward the long-term goal. This involves having a target in mind and a plan to gradually get there by refining the small, tedious skills that allow one to progress to the next step. For students in reader's classroom, this can mean guiding them to focus on practicing and refining “one small thing” that can help them move the next step forward. Ericsson and Pool explained that deliberate practice can be used by anyone who wants to improve at anything, even if just a little. Feedback is essential to the small steps in incremental growth. Students need to evaluate what they are doing well and what is not going well—and what should comprise the next goal. Author's role is to set the stage for students and to be the source of critical feedback when it is needed.
