ABSTRACT

A student writer enters a state of flow as the ideas for a creative writing piece pour from the mind to the page. Everything seems to come together automatically-and happiness is a byproduct of the intentional focus and progress that occur in the flow state. To help students self-monitor and reflect on flow states, allow students to verbalize and visualize their thinking during the flow experience. This is right in line with mindful excellence: When they are aware of the emotions associated with flow, students can find opportunities that result in experiences that are appropriately challenging. Every second of flow feels effortless because a person is so involved in the activity and knows step by step what to do. These pleasant emotions happen in flow because a person is so focused on the task that there is little distraction, so all energy is focused on what needs to be done.
