ABSTRACT

Once students are self-aware of emotions, they can feel empowered to use emotions to support growth and resilience. As students continue to grow their abilities to manage emotions, they will also learn more about their personal triggers and causes of particular emotions; this knowledge equips students to consider how emotional reactions impact behavior and progress. When students are able to analyze and manage emotions, they move toward mindful excellence, aware of how their thoughts, emotions, and beliefs about abilities affect how they pursue developing potential. Students can consider whether they can control emotions or if emotions control them, especially during stressful situations, such as taking algebra for high school credit. They comprehend the cognitive, physical, and social impacts stemming from the associated emotions. When students understand the connections and potential ripple effects of emotions on behaviors, relationships, and one's pursuit of excellence, mindful excellence can begin to take shape.
