ABSTRACT

Know thyself. In Bar-On's (2013) model, emotional self-awareness is described as our ability to be aware of, identify, and understand our emotions. Beyond recognizing a particular emotion (e.g., anger vs. fear), self-awareness involves knowing why we feel a certain way and realizing the triggers that lead us to these feelings. Bar-On noted that self-awareness is included in every description, assessment, and definition of emotional intelligence; it is essential.
