ABSTRACT

Teaching empathy begins at home. Doing chores, watching a movie together, game night—these events all present opportunities to model empathy and compassion, discuss what these skills mean in the world, and teach children how to be more caring. It is essential for parents to take advantage of the naturally occurring moments within the day—to view every interaction with reader's children as teachable moments not to be squandered away through inaction or distraction. Jhanna and Jessica are sisters born 3 years apart. For most of their childhood, they got along well, engaging in minor arguments over clothes and bathroom time. Every yelling match was quickly resolved, and they returned to being each other's best friend and closest ally. Until puberty. Things changed fast then. Now they can barely spend 5 minutes together without World War III breaking out.
