ABSTRACT

One frequent theme we hear from our clients is concern about their child’s future. If we are the parent of children with EF difficulties, then we usually have even more concern, because we see our child’s daily struggles to keep materials organized, change classes, write down homework, remember when the next test or assignment is due, and regulate emotions. When our child encounters problems, ask ourselves the question, “Is this a ‘can’t’ or a ‘won’t’ issue?” When we have tried our best and we feel like progress has stymied, consider enlisting outside help. If coaching is not available in our area, see if our child’s school has any resources or guidance. Mental health therapists and counselors have experience in working with issues like frustration, depression, and anger. Keep the teaching perspective and have a talk on the weekend when it’s not a stressful time.
