ABSTRACT

This chapter fosters the use of an authentic definition of research. Its five interdependent sections begin with a description of real-world research and its purpose. The Oxford Dictionary defines research as “the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.” Oxford also offers synonyms that include investigation, experimentation, testing, exploration, analysis, fact-finding, and examination. The CCSS-ELA incorporate research standards, specifically within each grade level’s writing strands. The steps and process for information, investigative, and tinkering/design research are similar, but not identical. It is provided the people with an opportunity to think closely about the fifth phase of the IBL framework. Readers had the opportunity to compare three different categories of student research and their related processes.
