ABSTRACT

In the wild, however, there are no emergency exits or remote-controlled air conditioners, so the simple act of survival often requires extreme biology. No matter if readers consider themself a daredevil or a cowardly lion, just hopping out of bed in the morning is proof that they live to the extreme. The human body is one of the most complex machines on Earth, containing an estimated 37 trillion microscopic parts called cells. Hie simplest life forms on Earth are microscopic, one-celled organisms, which are capable of performing all the basic functions of life that author's bodies require trillions of cells to do. There are many ways to be extreme. Some of the organisms in this book are extremophiles, meaning they thrive in environments that are inhospitable to most forms of life. Extremophiles come in many different varieties.
