ABSTRACT

You’re never alone. It’s true for people, and for all the other organisms on our planet, too. Plants, animals, bacteria, and fungi all live their lives intermingled—sometimes with members of the same species, other times with individuals from other species. Everywhere a creature turns, there’s another critter staring back. Maybe it’s a friend. Or a rival. It might be interested in mooching, mating, murdering—or all of the above. Life on Earth is an endless series of relationships, and some of them get pretty complicated. It’s like a soap opera. Or middle school.
