ABSTRACT
What do your students know about the practice of science? There is no better way to find out than by having them do their own research. Student-directed research not only leaves lasting impressions, but also has a major impact on how students regard themselves as scientists. They learn that most scientific research is long-term and requires many trials. Student scientists will face frequent setbacks and reconsiderations of original plans.
