ABSTRACT

Thinking Like an Engineer is a curriculum unit designed to engage students in design thinking while teaching them about multiple engineering career options. Using the engineering design process as an instructional approach or model prepares students for problem solving outside the context of the classroom. With ever-changing technologies, students need to be active and practiced problem solvers and innovative thinkers. This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book introduces students to engineers and their characteristics, job roles, and careers. It concludes with a challenge to engage students in design thinking using the engineering design process. The book provides students opportunities to learn about the branches of engineering and how to become an engineer. It gives students the opportunity to demonstrate their learning. Students are encouraged to share and communicate their engineering solutions to a formal audience in the format of their choice.
