ABSTRACT

Six of Chicago’s wealthiest and most influential businessmen set up a secret meeting. They knew that in order to take down Capone and the other gangsters, they would have to find people who were willing to risk their lives. They needed a group of investigators who were untouchable. The six businessmen knew their identities had to stay hidden or they would become targets of Capone and his men. One writer said that Ness and his team were so honest that they were “untouchable” by the gangsters. The nickname "The Untouchables" stuck. They decided to hire Alexander G. Jamie as their director. Jamie had served as the chief special agent of the Prohibition bureau. In the end, they selected nine men who were experienced in police and detective work and who had already resisted bribes from bootleggers and gangsters. The team’s first assignment was to make a dent in the cash flow of the gangsters.
