ABSTRACT

For years, it was a secret past that nobody wanted to talk about. The truth is that National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) was invented by bootleggers. During the Prohibition years, moonshiners in the Appalachian Mountains would make their illegal alcohol and pour it into jars. They then packed it carefully into boxes, put it into the trunk of a car, and covered it with a pile of blankets or coats. In 1947, Big Bill France held a meeting with the drivers, mechanics, and car owners to standardize the race rules. It was from this meeting that the NASCAR was formed. In 1948, NASCAR held its first official race on the sands of Daytona Beach, FL. Many of the drivers and mechanics were still involved in the moonshine trade. As NASCAR became more and more popular, large corporations paid to sponsor drivers and the cars. The corporations didn’t want anyone to talk about the history of the races.
