ABSTRACT

Legends of pirate treasure hidden in caves and buried on islands are still believed by treasure hunters today. The real truth is that most of the treasure that is recovered is from ships that sank in the ocean. But one island treasure story has fascinated fortune hunters for more than two centuries. It is the mystery of Oak Island and it still has not been solved. Everyone believed it was the stuff of pure imagination until one day in 1795, when a teenager, Daniel McGinnis, went exploring on Oak Island. For the next 200 years, treasure hunters tried at various times to excavate the deep tunnels on Oak Island. Diggers have found that there is more than one tunnel. Not only that, but the original tunnel seems to have a booby trap that the first diggers triggered. Professional treasure hunters and archaeologists have continued the search for the truth of the Oak Island tunnel, but it still remains a mystery.
