ABSTRACT

One of Molly's jobs was to carry pitchers of water to the soldiers firing the cannons. The water was used to cool down the hot cannon barrel. First it was shoved into the mouth of the cannon to tightly pack the cannonballs against the gunpowder. And after the cannon was fired, it was used to clean the sparks and gunpowder out of the cannon barrel. The men called for Molly and her pitcher of water so often that her nickname became Molly Pitcher. The soldiers kept yelling for Molly to bring more pitchers. She ran back and forth from the spring to keep the soldiers supplied. The time she ran to the cannon, she found that her husband had collapsed and had to be carried off the battlefield. Molly grabbed the ramrod and took over pounding the gunpowder and cannonballs into the gun barrel.
