ABSTRACT

Judge Winston took Pedro home to Hunting Tower Plantation and gave him a home, food, and work. When Peter learned English, he was able to tell the judge what he remembered of his past, but it wasn't much. The judge believed that Peter was from a wealthy family and had been kidnapped, probably for ransom, but something had gone wrong. The judge had him trained as a blacksmith, which was an excellent job for such a strong boy. Peter fought for General George Washington as they tried to stop the British from taking over Philadelphia. Peter fought his way through the group of soldiers and threw one of them off a horse. Peter refused, the man said he would leave until Peter fought him. And in 1825, Peter Francisco was named sergeant-at-arms of the Virginia Legislature. A foreign ship sailed up the James River and dropped anchor. Fishermen on the wharf watched as a longboat was lowered into the water.
