ABSTRACT

Anna was a member of the Culper Spy Ring, and she used her laundry to send messages to Caleb Brewster on his boat. The Culper Spy Ring began when Benjamin Tallmadge was selected by George Washington to recruit spies in New York. When he returned to his farm, he would give his messages to Caleb Brewster, who was a whaleboat operator and another member of the Culper Spy Ring. The public did not learn about the Culper Spy Ring until the 1930s. The Culper Ring reported directly to General George Washington and operated for 5 years without a single one of its spies being caught. The Culper Spy Ring began when Benjamin Tallmadge was selected by George Washington to recruit spies in New York. At the time, Tallmadge was a 22-year-old major in the Continental Army and had grown up on Long Island, NY.
