ABSTRACT

Nathan Hale stood in a row with the other officers. In September of 1776, New York City was a stronghold of the British. As he stood before Colonel Knowlton, Hale knew he had never served in a real battle. Hale remained in New York City, spying and taking notes for 8 days, but on September 20, Hale was captured by British soldiers who discovered his notes and the drawings. Early on the morning of September 21, Nathan Hale was led to the gallows. Hale was born in Coventry, CT, and was the sixth of 12 children born to his parents, Richard and Elizabeth Hale. At the age of 14, Nathan and his 16-year-old brother Enoch were sent to Yale College. Even though he was only 14, Nathan excelled in his studies and graduated with honors at the age of 18.
