ABSTRACT

Washington respected Arnold and wanted to recognize him for all of his past work, so he appointed Arnold to an important but physically less demanding post-naming Arnold as the new commander of West Point. Arnold used the excuse that he wanted to hire them to help protect West Point. If he had, Arnold certainly would have turned them in and Washington's spies would have been killed. Arnold was disappointed that he could not hand over the identities of the spies to General Clinton, but he tried to make up for it by filling West Point with as many guns and as much ammunition as he could get. Benedict Arnold's grand scheme had fallen apart, but because of Colonel James, he also had a warning. Because Arnold had been such a hero to so many people, the colonial rebels took the news of his treason very hard.
