Belle sat with her face pressed against the rough wood. She tried to keep her breathing slow and quiet as she peered through the knothole to watch the Yankee soldiers. She slipped quietly out of her hiding place and went back to her room in her aunt’s boarding house. She kept her horse off the roads to avoid meeting any Yankee soldiers and rode through the woods and fields of the Shenandoah River Valley. The soldiers rolled open a map and began talking about where the troops would be moving. Timothy Webster was a double agent working for the Union. The soldiers usually felt that a young girl could not be any threat to them. Belle was arrested several times, but only spent a few weeks in prison.
