As the president of the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad, Samuel Felton had informants working for him to warn him about possible train robberies. And for safety’s sake, some of the Pinkerton men even cut the telegraph lines so no one could alert the press that the president was ill. Six days later Abraham Lincoln tried to relax and watch a play. Unfortunately, it was not a Pinkerton man who was assigned to guard the president. Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 15, 1865.
