ABSTRACT

Germ warfare is something only found in science fiction movies, when evil warlords unleash a deadly disease to wipe out their enemy. During the Civil War, there were several plots to use germ warfare to affect the enemy. Fortunately, none of them actually worked. The science behind germs was still in its formative stages. Scientists understood that germs caused some disease but did not know always know how the germs were transmitted. During Civil War times, yellow fever outbreaks happened every year during the warm season. Sometimes the outbreaks were small, but other times there were hundreds of people infected with numerous deaths. Dr. Blackburn thought that he could use yellow fever as a weapon against the North. In the spring of 1864, there was a severe yellow fever epidemic in Bermuda. Dr. Blackburn volunteered his service to help the sick and dying, but the philanthropic doctor had ulterior motives.
