ABSTRACT
Maps were incredibly important during the Civil War. Printed maps were expensive and most people did not own any maps. In addition, parts of the South and West did not have detailed maps, so any map was considered valuable. Often spies were sent out to make maps of local areas to help officers know where they needed to send their troops.
